Assistant Director of Nursing

Working in accordance with established policies and procedures and under the direction of the Director of Nursing, this person is responsible for supervision of resident safety, monitoring and overseeing Health Center as outlined below.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Position involves supervision of CNAs, OMTs, LPNs and RNs and additional staff in the Health Center, as delegated.

  • Assist in the development of the Infection Prevention and Control Program in accordance with current and future state and federal regulations. Acts as the Infection Preventions/Coordinator.

  • Assist in the development of the Antibiotic Stewardship Program.

  • Coordinate the facility’s Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Program in accordance with current and future state and federal regulations with support from other department representatives.

  • Assist with the coordination of resident admissions and discharges.

  • Coordinate new employee orientation, ongoing on-the-job training, and competency-based skills training for all nursing staff. Ensure the on-the-job training program is followed and validate quality training (orientation/skills checklist).

  • Assist in providing supervision/direction of Health Center nursing personnel on a daily basis. Assist nursing staff in assessment and plan of care of residents; serve as a positive influence to staff in achieving quality resident care.

  • Provide for residents’ rights as defined in the Patient Bill of Rights. Assist with monitoring daily cares and programs that are in place to include, but may not be limited to: Infection Control Program, Skin Program, Fall Program, Restorative Program, On-call on a scheduled basis for nursing questions, and work assigned floor duties as Charge Nurse, when needed.

  • Follow established performance standards and performs duties according to facility policies and procedures.

  • Attend monthly Care Associate and In-Service meetings.

  • Contributes to a positive, healthy and safe work environment.


Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from accredited Nursing program.
  • Currently licensed RN (Registered Nurse) with the Iowa Board of Nursing.
  • Currently CPR certified.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background screen.
  • Ability to work with sensitive/confidential material.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in geriatric nursing.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in management of staff development or training.
  • Prior MDS experience.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time for up to 90% of the work day.
  • Demonstrate physical dexterity in moving, bending, stooping and pulling for up to 75% of the work day.
  • Able to move promptly, especially in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty-one (51) pounds and assist in moving a resident.
  • Must be able to transport residents via wheelchair or shower chair, pushing up to 150 pounds, unassisted.
  • Must be able to transfer, lift, turn and position a resident weighing up to 125 pounds, unassisted, or with the assistance of one for a resident weighting over 125 pounds.
  • Resident-lifting tasks, the maximum recommended weight limit is thirty-five (35) pounds, but even less when the task is performed under less than ideal circumstances.
  • Must be able to wear protective gloves to guard against exposure to body fluids and cleaning agents.
  • Must be able to distinguish appropriate body fluids and food temperatures.
  • May be subject to offensive odors and combative behavior.
  • Requires manual coordination to operate computer and other business equipment such as fax machine, phone, copier and touchscreen monitor.
  • Normal vision and hearing required.
  • Must be able to function efficiently despite distractions and interruptions.
  • Communicates orally and/or in writing with residents, coworkers, families and public.
  • Possible contact with needles and other sharp objects.
  • Ability to use both hands and arms simultaneously.
